Police investigate fatal motorbike crash in Northland's Kaihu

The holiday road toll has risen again after the death of a motorcyclist has died in Northland early Sunday morning.

The motorcyclist died after coming off the road on State Highway 12 in Kaihu, at around 12.20am.

The male rider sadly died at the scene, a police spokesperson said.

The motorcycle passenger received moderate injuries and was taken to Whangārei Hospital for treatment.

Kaihu is close to the holiday hotspot of Kai Iwi Lakes, in the Kaipara district.

The police serious crash unit are investigating.

The death will be added to the holiday road toll, which officially runs from 4pm December 24 to 6am January 5.

Eleven people have died on New Zealand roads since the holiday period began.

On Christmas Eve, one person was killed in a two-car crash that injured five others south of Taupō.

On Christmas Day, a person died after a truck and car collided in Waihola, just south of Dunedin, while a motorcyclist was killed after crashing in Gordonton, in Waikato.

About 10.30pm on Christmas evening, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a car in New Windsor, Auckland.

On Boxing Day, a truck driver died after crashing in Lewis Pass. He was Rangiora man John Osborne, 62.

On December 29, one person died in a three-car crash in the Northland town of Pukenui.

On New Year’s Day, a teenager died after being hit by a vehicle in Omaha, north of Auckland city, while a man was thrown out of his ute and died at the scene of the crash in New Plymouth.
