Person dead after serious crash between cheese truck and car south of Dunedin

A person has died in a crash between a truck carrying cheese, and a car, on State Highway 1, just south of Dunedin.

The crash happened at Waihola, about 30km south of Dunedin, about 9.15am, a police statement said, on State Highway 1, also known as the Taieri Plains Highway, near the intersection with Titri Rd.
Motorists were asked to avoid travelling on the state highway in this area if possible. The road was closed throughout the day – shortly before 8pm police said it had reopened.

Police said about 3pm that the driver of the car had died at the scene of the crash.
Two ambulances and a helicopter were sent to the crash, a St John spokeswoman said.
One person with minor injuries was taken to Dunedin hospital, she said.
A truck loaded with cheese was involved in the crash, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said, and its trailer unit had rolled over.
The car involved in the crash had also been flipped, and one person had been trapped inside, the spokesman said.
Three fire crews attended the crash.
