One person dead, five hurt after crash on State Highway 1 south of Taupō

One person has died, and five others have been hurt, in a two-car crash south of Taupō.

St John confirmed they treated six patients at the scene on State Highway 1 near Motutere, but one had died.

Another person was in a serious condition, two were moderately injured, and two had minor injuries.

Four people were taken to hospital.

Police said the crash happened about 7.15pm and the section of highway was closed. Two rescue helicopters were also called to the scene.

“Motorists should avoid the area or expect significant delays,” police said in a statement.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said there were five fire appliances at the scene.

According to Waka Kotahi NZTA, the crash happened on the “volcanic loop highway”, near Waitapu Road.
