The front that slammed the country with heavy rain has now moved offshore.
The front that slammed the country with heavy rain has now moved offshore.

Weather watches lifted: All severe weather watches and warnings across the motu have now elapsed as the heavy rain front clears the country.

Fine Sunday ahead: Conditions are drying out rapidly across the country, with a fine Sunday forecast for most of the North and South islands.

The winter chill returns: Temperatures are dropping back to seasonal norms, bringing the return of inland South Island frosts and overnight lows of 8°C in Wellington and 10°C in Auckland.

All of the watches and warnings that covered the motu as the recent rainy front passed over the country have now elapsed and more seasonal, lower temperatures are coming in its wake.

MetService metereologist Devlin Lynden told Stuff there is still a showery southwest flow over the country and that may still bring a few thunderstorms for western parts of the North Island through Saturday morning, being confined to the west coast from Taranaki to Raglan after 11am and into the afternoon.

There is a risk of hail in that area, he said.

Elsewhere, there is still a chance of heavy showers but the general trend is an easing of the rain that slammed into the country in the past two days.

Sunday should be fine in the North Island and for the mainland too, except for cloud and the possibility of showers on the West Coast.

Temperatures across the country will return to seasonal norms with Auckland looking at a high of 18C, dipping as low as 10C.

Wellington can expect 16C down to 8C, while the South Island could see frosts return in inland areas such Wanaka, Queenstown, Timaru and possibly even Christchurch, with highs of between 11 to 14C for many places.
