‘Wonderful news’ in Ashburton
Ashburton District Mayor Liz McMillan said news of the winner being in her town was “wonderful news”, and had created a stir among the locals.
“I wish the winner all the best and if they are headed out shopping I’d encourage them to splash some cash around our local retailers,” she told Stuff.
“If I had won $28m I would be spending as much locally as I could.”
The Four Square that sold the ticket said they were “absolutely thrilled”.
“This is proof that big dreams really can come true when you shop local. We’re proud to be part of such a fantastic community and are delighted for our lucky winner,” the store said on their Facebook page on Friday.
“A huge thank you to all our loyal customers for supporting local every day – it means the world to us and helps keep our community thriving.”
