A woman is in a critical condition after a serious crash in Hawke's Bay. 

The two car crash happened at 7.25am on Friday, on State Highway 51 near Napier.

Roads are closed on State Highway 2 between Marine Parade and Awatoto Rd and diversions are in place. 

A policeman at the scene said a woman was in a critical condition and another two people sustained moderate injuries.

'It appears one of the drivers wasn't giving way and the crash happened as a result,' he told Stuff.

All have been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings.  

At 9.40am a police spokesperson said the road would remain closed for another hour.

A spokesperson from Hawke's Bay Hospital confirmed a woman in her 40s was in critical condition, while a female in her late teens had been assessed and discharged. Another teenage girl was being assessed in the emergency department.
