One critical in Waikato crash

Four people have been hurt in a two-vehicle crash near Morrinsville in the Waikato.

Two of the injured are in a critical condition after the accident on Sunday morning near Mangateparu. 

It happened around 10.15am and blocked the intersection of Tahuna-Morrinsville Highway and Cameron Road, a police statement said. 

Police have closed the road and traffic is being diverted to State Highway 27 as an alternative route.

The road is expected to remain closed for the next few hours while the Serious Crash Unit investigates.

A rescue helicopter airlifted the injured to Waikato Hospital, which received four patients.

Two were in critical condition in intensive care on Sunday afternoon, according to the Waikato District Health Board.

Another two were still being assessed in the Emergency Department.
