Magnitude 4.3 earthquake shakes lower North Island

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake has shaken the lower North Island.

The quake, at 7.28pm on Monday, was centred 20 kilometres northeast of Eketāhuna at a depth of 21km, GeoNet said.

It described the shaking as 'moderate'.

Within the first 15 minutes or so after the event, more than 3500 people reported feeling it.

Many of the reports were from Palmerston North and Paraparaumu.
