A motorcyclist is dead and another person is in a critical condition following a crash in Canterbury.

Emergency services were called to the crash, between a motorcycle and a car, shortly after 8pm on Thursday.

The crash took place at the intersection of Poyntzs Rd and South Eyre Rd in the Eyrewell Forest area, part of the Waimakariri district.

A St John spokesman earlier said one person was taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

The intersection is expected to remain closed until Friday morning. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews attended the incident. A spokesman deferred questions to police.

The crash happened just an hour after another crash between a car and a motorcycle, in or near the Burnham Military Camp.

A police spokeswoman said the crash took place just after 7pm on Powles Rd, between Allen Rd and Aylesbury Rd.

She was uncertain about any injuries but said someone was taken to the Emergency Department.

A FENZ spokesman said the crash happened on Aylesbury Rd, just outside the camp.

Another motorcyclist was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition on Thursday night after crashing into a dirt bank off State Highway 1, north of the Hurunui River Bridge.
