Ford Ranger edges Tesla Model Y in November sales

The Ford Ranger has continued its market momentum, edging the Tesla Model Y to be New Zealand’s most popular vehicle in November.

Figures released by the Motor Industry Association show that a total of 1527 Rangers were registered last month. The popular pick-up earned almost 50% more registrations than the Model Y (1099 registrations), with the Toyota Hilux (925) completing the top three.

The Mitsubishi Outlander (599), Toyota RAV4 (572), BYD Atto 3 (475), Suzuki Swift (438), Mitsubishi ASX (397), MG ZS (360), and Mitsubishi Triton (313) completed the top 10.

The Ford Ranger’s hot streak continued in November

Overall, 15,621 new vehicles were registered in November, representing a 4.3% drop year-on-year. The market is down 0.2% year-to-date with one month of the calendar year to go.

Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand holds a narrow lead over Toyota in the passenger market for 2022

Toyota was both the overall market leader (17%, 2709 units) and the passenger market leader (15%, 1654 units) for the month.

The latter result helps Toyota close the gap to close rivals Mitsubishi for the top spot in the passenger market for the year. With one month to go, Mitsubishi leads Toyota; 16,276 units to 15,803.

The Motor Industry Association’s Mark Stockdale says that the market continues to be impacted by the implications of the Clean Car Discount and upcoming Clean Car Standard.

“Along with supply chain challenges, the 2022 market is being affected by changes to Clean Car Discount introduced on April and the Clean Car Standard about to take effect on the first of January,” says Stockdale.

“There has been an increase in low emission vehicle sales and a sustained reduction in the sales of light commercial vehicles.”

The Atto 3’s strong month comes as the Chinese brand continues to grow its national footprint. Four new BYD dealer sites in New Plymouth, Botany Town Centre, Lower Hutt, and Dunedin are set to open before the end of the year.

Other notable results included the new Ford Everest, which ended November in 15th with 237 registrations. It was one spot behind the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, low supply seeing it drop well below its typical position in the top 10.

Almost all Eclipse Cross models registered in November were plug-in hybrids. It was the top selling PHEV for the month (202 units), leading the Outlander PHEV (164) and the MG HS Plus EV (42).

The popularity of the Tesla Model Y continues to come at the expense of the Model 3, with the former outnumbering the latter almost four to one in November. Having accumulated 3358 registrations year-to-date, the Model Y is on target to be New Zealand’s most popular EV for the year.

Toyota once again dominated the hybrid segment, with the RAV4 and Corolla Cross ending up first (380) and third (160) respectively for the month; split by Honda’s Jazz e:HEV (189).
