Ranger bites back in October registrations

The top-ten best selling vehicles for 2022, as of the end of October.

The Ford Ranger is back on top in October’s new vehicle registration figures, as overall sales improve over this time last year.

Year-to-date, the market is up 0.3% on the first ten months of 2021. October’s total registrations of 14,736 were up 5.1% compared to the same month last year, comprising 10,771 passenger cars and SUVs and 3965 commercial vehicles.

Ford sold 1491 new Rangers last month – 283 of which were the new Raptor – beating the Mitsubishi Outlander (1030 units) and the Toyota RAV4 (746 units) for the monthly winner. The strong October for Ford’s ute also put the Blue Oval back on top in the commercial vehicle sector for the month, with 38% market share over the Toyota Hilux’s 16% share (638 units) and the Mitsubishi Triton’s 6% share (230 units).

For the commercial market share year to date, the Ford Ranger has regained the lead (22% share and 8939 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux (20% share and 8256 units) and then the Mitsubishi Triton (14% share and 5546 units).

However, the overall market leader for October remains Toyota with 20% (2969 units), followed by Mitsubishi with 14% (2019 units) and Ford with 13% (1972 units). The same order applies for the year-to-date, Toyota holding the lead with 18% (24,091 units), followed by Mitsubishi with 15% share (20,980 units) and then Ford with 8% (11,649 units).

Moving to the electrified crowd, there were 1083 battery electric (BEV) passenger vehicles, 42 BEV light commercial vehicles, 25 BEV heavy vehicles, 919 (plug-in hybrids) PHEV’s and 2281 petrol hybrid vehicles sold for the month.

The best-selling fully electric models were the BYD Atto 3 (206 units), marking another strong month for the newcomer, the MG ZS EV (169 units) and the Tesla Model Y (167 units).

Of the 42 light commercial BEVs, 21 were Mercedes-Benz Vito vans (possibly buoyed by the recent NZ Post purchase), 11 were LDV eT60 utes, and 6 were LDV eDeliver 9 SUVs. There were also 25 electric heavy commercial registrations, 19 of which were CRRC eT12Max electric buses.

Registrations of plug-in hybrids were strong with 919 units registered for the month. The top-selling models were the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (409 units) followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander (313 units) and then the MG HS (83 units).

There were 2281 hybrids registered in the month of October, with the most popular models being the Toyota RAV4 (599 units) followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross (237 units) and the Honda Jazz (231 units).

The SUV and passenger vehicle sales saw Toyota take the lead for the month with 21% market share (2226 units) followed by Mitsubishi with 16% (1767 units) and then Kia with 9% market share (1003 units).

The top-selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the Mitsubishi Outlander (1,030 units) followed by the Toyota RAV4 (746 units) and then the Toyota Corolla (478 units).

Mitsubishi is still leading the year though, although it’s close with 15% share (14,970 units), closely followed by Toyota also with 15% share (14,152 units) and then Kia with 11% share (10,181 units).
