Corvette to make first Australasian appearance at Tailem Bend Supercars

Friday, 7 May 2021

Holdens of all shapes and sizes converged on Timaru over Easter weekend for the marque's national show in Timaru.

Seventy years of Holden motorsport will be celebrated this weekend at the Tailem Bend round of OTR SuperSprint Supercars with a special convoy of Holdens and a surprise appearance of the mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette.

As part of special activities to commemorate the end of Holden’s involvement from mainstream Supercars competition, Saturday morning will see a massive Holden convoy drive from the National Motor Museum in Birdwood to the track.

“The Final Roar is a way to recognise the role Holden has played over seven-decades of competitive motor racing and acknowledge everyone who has had some involvement with the brand, whether they’re a passionate fan, driver or team owner,” said Marc Ebolo, managing director of GM Australia and New Zealand.

“Holden holds a special place in the hearts of many South Australians, so this is a fitting place and occasion to launch the Final Roar tribute to the marque.”

As well as the Final Roar convoy, ten significant Holden vehicles will partake in a parade lap before GMSV shows off the upcoming Chevrolet Corvette on track, the first time the mid-engined sports car will be displayed in Australia or New Zealand.

It will be here as a US-import left-hand drive model but will not go on public display.

“We are excited that the C8 Corvette is making a brief on-track appearance at The Bend,” said the director of GMSV, Joanne Stogiannis.

“It’s rather fitting to showcase Corvette in conjunction with the Final Roar tribute, as it’s a nod to 70-years of motorsport and also celebrates the introduction of an iconic supercar in its own right.

“Staging its first glimpse at the track speaks to our racing heritage and also provides a reminder of the legendary performance credentials of the Corvette.”

The Holden parade and Corvette debut will take place on Saturday afternoon at 5.50pm New Zealand time. GMSV added that the right-hand drive Corvette will get a proper reveal at a later date.
