Camaro to replace Commodore in Supercars?

Thursday, 20 February 2020

A secret plan to replace the Commodore Supercars racer with the Chevrolet Camaro as early as next year is reportedly underway.

The news comes from CarAdvice, which reports that introducing the American Camaro to the Supercars racing championship will spearhead the new General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) brand.

GM would use GSMV to re-engineer models like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs and could even introduce new Cadillac and Hummer models to the Australasian market.

The Camaro might take over racing duties from the outgoing Commodore. Ford v Chevrolet, anyone?

As previously reported, GSMV will likely evolve from HSV's distribution of the existing RHD Camaro models and the upcoming C8 Corvette. This will let General Motors retain a presence in Australia and New Zealand despite the closure of the Holden brand.

As for the racing Camaro, such an idea has been rumoured since Ford confirmed it would enter the Mustang into Supercars. Comprehensively winning the 2019 championship with Scott McLaughlin at the helm will surely have rankled the GM bosses, allowing the Aussie reps to put forward a good case for the Camaro.

The proposal is still yet to be signed off, so folks from Holden, GM and HSV aren't able to comment just yet.

In the meantime, Holden has committed to supporting all current Commodore race teams through to the end of 2020.

The Commodore's final official racing season will start this weekend at the Adelaide 500.
