Timaru’s council is advertising for a theatre manager to bring its Theatre Royal project to life now that demolition and construction at the site is under way.
The council decided to go ahead with a new proposal to upgrade the Theatre Royal and build a new museum behind it exactly one year ago today.
The theatre has been closed since November 2019 ahead of a planned upgrade which was eventually scrapped.
A job advertisement, posted to the Timaru District Council’s online job noticeboard, outlined the role and had a link to the job description.
The successful candidate would be responsible for delivering the “smooth day-to-day running of the theatre while delivering a diverse and inspiring programme that reflects Timaru’s creativity and community identity”.
“This permanent full-time position offers 40 hours per week, with hours that may vary in accordance with performance bookings. The annual salary for this role is $129,643.50 ‒ $149,556.74 per annum.”
The position had four to five direct reports and responsibility for managing a budget of $1 million to $2m.
“We are seeking an experienced and passionate leader for this landmark community venue. This role will oversee the operations, programming, and community engagement ensuring the delivery of exceptional, efficient, and customer-focused services.
“The role is also responsible for optimising staffing to meet operational needs, while fostering a positive and high-performing team culture.”
The council’s ideal candidate would have an event management/performing arts degree and at least three to five years’ experience running a venue and team of a similar, or larger, scale.
“As part of this high-profile and much-loved community project, you will connect closely with volunteers, artists, and local groups to celebrate every success and milestone,” the ad said.
Timaru District Council acting chief executive Stephen Doran, who was in the role in Nigel Trainor’s absence, said the theatre manager would be responsible for going out to sell the venue in the market.
Doran said they would also ensure the operational aspects were in place “prior to curtain up in 2027”.
Applications for the permanent full-time role were open until November 17, however the advert said the council could make an appointment prior to the closing date if it found a suitable applicant.
