Toilets come down at Strathallan Corner as redevelopment continues
Friday, 16 May 2025
It was a case of flushing out the old as the digger came down on Timaru’s CBD toilets on Thursday.
As part of the first stage of the $1.6 million redevelopment of Strathallan St, which began on Monday, the toilet block was being demolished to make way for four individual stalls. One of these would have disability access with baby change facilities.
The demolition work began about 10am and was expected to be completed on Friday.
Members of the public stopped to watch as the walls came down on the toilet block, taking photos and videos of the work, and talking to contractors at the site.
A Timaru District Council spokesperson said four days in, the project continued to go to plan.
Stage one works were expected to be completed by the end of June, the spokesperson said.
During stage two, the remainder of the site would be landscaped, and the project was expected to be completed by July.
But this could be delayed by bad weather, or the discovery of archaeological items.
Two temporary toilets would be provided on-site but community members would be encouraged to use the toilets at the Timaru Library or on Station St.
The bronze Bob Fitzsimmons statue, which was removed from its plinth on April 14, and moved to temporary storage during the work, would return during stage 2 of the project but exactly where was yet to be revealed.
