The Press_ has asked a few of the Mainland’s leading figures to tell us what they enjoyed watching, listening to, reading, and experiencing during 2024._

Waimakiriri mayor Dan Gordon travelled to Europe to watch the Abba Voyage show and experience French cuisine, but closer to home he loved the Maurice & I film, enjoyed renowned local poet Doc Drumheller and watched The Jordan Luck Band in Kaiapoi.

What book, or books, did you particularly enjoy this year? I’m listening to an audiobook Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I’m also part way through reading He Tipua: The Life and Times of Sir Apirana Ngata by Ranginui Walker

Which film, or films, stood out for you? Maurice & I. I really enjoyed this movie - it was a reflection on the remarkable partnership of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney.

Was there a stand-out TV show you would recommend? I watched The Crown again and Downton Abbey. I also enjoyed the English Version of House of Cards and currently enjoying The Diplomat and the new Yellowstone episodes.

Do you have a favourite poem, or poet, from 2024? I am a big fan of poetry by Waimakariri District’s own Doc Drumheller. Doc is a world-renowned poet and this year released his third book Hotel Theresa, a collection of poems.

If you are a podcast listener - what did you discover in 2024? I have really enjoyed the The Rest is Politics podcast series. It offers great insights into US and UK elections. Also, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings and Queens, and The 9th Floor - a series on former New Zealand prime ministers.

Gordon so loves Abba he’s been to see their holographic show in the UK.

What new music, or old favourites, did you have on high rotate this year? Dire Straits and Abba – because I went to a couple of Abba inspired concerts this year. At the moment I’m listening to Christmas Music on an apple Christmas playlist. Elton John and Ed Sheeran’s Merry Christmas is my favourite. I’m also enjoying Cozy Little Christmas by Katy Perry

Tell us about a memorable meal, or restaurant experience from 2024? Les Philosophes in Paris was absolutely stunning. I have eaten there before, and it was lovely to return there in 2024. I also enjoy Roca in Christchurch, Lemongrass Thai restaurant in Loburn and Nom Nom Rangiora as well as the Rangiora RSA. Plus, a four layer salted caramel hummingbird cake made for me for me by a good friend for my birthday a couple of weeks ago.

What was your favourite art exhibition, or piece of art you saw this year? I love the Kaiapoi Art Expo and visited the Louvre while in Paris.

What was the best live show, gig, or theatre of 2024? Abba Voyage in London. The Jordan Luck Band in Kaiapoi a few weeks ago - such a great night out.

Finally, is there a cultural event you are looking forward to in 2025? I enjoy all the Waitangi Day celebrations in our district and I’m also looking forward to the opening of the new Court Theatre. I’m especially looking forward to seeing The Kings Speech running there from September to October.
