New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell has become the first Kiwi batter in 46 years to reach No 1 in the ICC men’s ODI batting rankings.

Mitchell overtook Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and India captain Rohit Sharma after his century against the West Indies in Christchurch on Sunday.

Mitchell’s 119 off 118 balls in the series opener earned him player of the match and pushed him one rating point clear of Sharma, whose first stint at the top lasted just 22 days.

The last New Zealander to lead the ODI batting list was Glenn Turner in 1979. Other prominent Black Caps - Nathan Astle, Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson - peaked at No 3 but never reached the summit.

Elsewhere in the ODI rankings, Pakistan’s Babar Azam has moved up to sixth after his unbeaten 102 against Sri Lanka, while team-mates Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman climbed to 22nd and 26th following two half centuries each.

In the ICC men’s T20I rankings, New Zealand batter Tim Robinson has moved up eight spots to a career-high 15th after scoring 45 against the West Indies.

Seamer Jacob Duffy has edged up to second, with Mitchell Santner and Pakistan’s Mohammad Nawaz also rising.
