Hippopotamus to end dinner service after its summer break

Hippopotamus is one of Wellington’s top eateries.

Dinner is no longer on the menu at one of Wellington’s top eateries, with Hippopotamus not reopening for the evening service after its summer break this month.

The restaurant at QT Wellington hotel will continue to serve breakfast, and high tea from Friday to Sunday.

Simon White, general manager of EVT Hotel Operations, said: “The decision to close dinner service signals the end of an era for Hippopotamus, a restaurant that epitomised the style of fine dining of its time. We look forward to sharing the evolution of QT Wellington’s dining experience in the coming months.”

Hot Sauce Asian Bar and Eatery will also remain closed as part of a hotel refurbishment this year, including an upgrade to food and beverage facilities, and a new restaurant.

The news comes after world-renowned Wellington restaurant Hiakai decided to close its doors next month. Last year, award-winning restaurant Field & Green announced it would close after nine years, citing tough times.
