Election 2020: How the world reacted to Jacinda Ardern's landslide victory

Jacinda Ardern’s major victory in the 2020 election is making headlines around the world.
In the United Kingdom, the BBC described Ardern as having scored a “landslide win”, while British Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised Ardern for her victory.
“Congratulations @jacindaardern for winning a second term as New Zealand PM,” Johnson wrote on Twitter just before 1am Sunday (NZT).

“From our work together to tackle climate change to forging an exciting new trade partnership, the UK and NZ have great things to look forward to in the future.”
London’s mayor Sadiq Khan has congratulated Ardern on her victory as well.
“Looking forward to continuing London’s special relationship with NZ based on our shared vision for an inclusive, fairer and greener future,” Khan tweeted.
Across the ditch, news.com.au described Ardern’s big win as a “total disaster” for National.
The leader of Australia’s Labor Party, Anthony Albanese, was focusing on the positive side of the election night, however.
Julia Gillard, who was the 27th Prime Minister of Australia, congratulated Arden on her win.
“You have led NZ through difficult times, with an understanding of the special power of kindness,” she said. “Your leadership will continue to inspire people around the world, especially women.”
Australian former Labor leader Bill Shorten said New Zealanders had “great taste in political leaders” in a post on Twitter congratulating Ardern.
“Huge congrats to my friend @jacindaardern and the whole team at @nzlabour on what is shaping up to be famous victory tonight.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Ardern via Twitter and in a statement on his website.
“Over the years, Prime Minister Ardern and I have been working together to move forward on the things that matter most to Canadians and New Zealanders, including addressing the health and economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring a sustainable economic recovery that includes everyone, fighting climate change, and empowering women and girls around the world,” he said.
“Her dedication and determination has helped advance these important issues, and I look forward to continuing our progress to build a more inclusive, equal, and resilient world for everyone.”
Meanwhile, in the US, The New York Times described Ardern – a “hero to liberals abroad” – as being validated at home.
And director general of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Ardern’s election victory was “very well deserved”.
”Thank you for your outstanding leadership in the #COVID19 response. I look forward to continuing to work with you and your government. Together!”
The Dalai Lama also offered Ardern his congratulations on her victory.
“I admire the courage, wisdom and leadership you have shown in these challenging times,” he said.
“I particularly applaud the way you have responded with calm, compassion and respect for others in the face of tragedy.”
