The US president made the comments during a meeting with the Ukrainian president at the White House on Friday (local time), the Washington Post reported.

Zelenskyy has worn a military-style outfit since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Trump commented on Zelenskyy’s attire, while saying he was “all dressed up” for the Ukrainian, the Washington Post reported.

A journalist also questioned his attire, with Zelenskyy responding that he would “wear a costume after this war will finish”.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine shared a post on social media on Sunday (local time) with the message “Ukrainians have their suits”.

“Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians changed their smart office attire for military uniforms to protect their homes and families,” it read.

“For others, daily outfits became a symbol of a lifetime mission, sacrifice and saving lives. Amid war, Ukrainian suits may look different, but they are all worn with the ultimate dignity.”

The post included photos of troops in full gear, a double amputee with two prosthetic legs and a doctor in scrubs covered in blood among others.

Melaniya Podolyak, a Ukrainian woman whose partner was killed in 2023 in the war, also responded.

She shared a photo on X, formerly known as Twitter, of a woman holding a sign with the message: “Will Russia stop killing Ukrainians if we all wear suits?”

Trump’s treatment of Zelenskyy at the White House has received criticism, with France’s Prime Minister François Bayrou calling it a show of “brutality” that aimed to humiliate him, the Associated Press reported.
