ANZ Premiership introduces ‘Super Shot’ and other innovations for 2025

The ANZ Premiership could be set for a significant shake-up

New Zealand’s ANZ Premiership will break with tradition and introduce the controversial ‘Super Shot’ for 2025.

For the first time in the competition’s history, the two-point shot will be in effect in the final five minutes of each quarter this season.

The ANZ Premiership follows Australia’s Super Netball, who brought in the ‘Super Shot’ in 2017 for the start of its new competition. England’s Netball Super League will also use the ‘Super Shot’ for its 2025 season for the first time.

The ‘Super Shot’ will allow shooters to score two points with shots from 3.5m away from the goal post (the same as in Fast5 ) over the last five minutes of each quarter.

It is not a feature of traditional international rules, but has proved popular with fans in Australia after being controversial in the early years.

There have been increased calls for a ‘Super Shot’ in the ANZ Premiership with former Tactix head coach Marianne Delaney-Hoshek among those to endorse it.

“I just think it’s quite a great entertainment piece as well for crowds. That might open up how we play and might make us think a bit differently how we play,” Delaney-Hoshek told Stuff in 2023.

Along with the introduction of the ‘Super Shot’, Netball New Zealand (NNZ) has confirmed several other innovations for the 2025 season.

These include a coach’s box designated space in front of the team’s bench to allow more direct engagement and strategic communication with players.

Each team will be able to call one timeout per half. Umpires will also wear microphones with live audio broadcast in the stadium to provide fans greater insight into officiating decisions and improving clarity.

The ANZ Premiership moves to a shortened two full round format over a 10-week period (previously three rounds) in 2025 after strong feedback from players, coaches and other key stakeholders.

NNZ chief executive Jennie Wyllie said the changes reflected a commitment to innovation and fan engagement. NNZ was always looking for ways to evolve the ANZ Premiership and ensure it remained a world-class competition, she said.

“The introduction of the two-point shot in particular is a significant move that we believe will bring an added layer of excitement and drama to matches, encouraging teams to take on the challenge of a long-range shot.

“The ANZ Premiership has always been a showcase for high-performance netball, and these adjustments are about evolving with the sport while preserving its fundamental principles.

“We’ve listened to our fans, players, coaches, and officials, and we are confident these changes will create a dynamic and engaging competition in 2025.”

What shape the ANZ Premiership takes in 2026 remained uncertain. NNZ has previously said it is exploring all possibilities as it works through broadcast options.

The ANZ Premiership season begins on May 10 with the Central Pulse hosting the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in the opening match in Palmerston North.
