You Pick A Side: Should you split the bill evenly or pay for what you ordered?

Thursday, 23 April 2026

OK, who paid for what?
OK, who paid for what?

Stuff’s new weekly series diving into the small, everyday topics that get people talking.

There’s no shortage of big issues to debate — but what about the little ones that spark surprisingly strong opinions?

Each week, we’ll put up a simple question, make the case for both sides, and let you decide. Vote in the poll, or have your say in the comments.

So … pick a side.

The case for splitting the bill evenly

No one wants to be the bill detective. Splitting it evenly keeps things easy. No calculators, no awkward “who had what,” and no one holding up the table while everyone debates over two garlic breads. You’re there for a good time, not forensic accounting. Everyone chips in, everyone moves on, and no one leaves muttering about $3.50. Clean and drama free.

The case for paying for what you ordered

Paying for what you ordered is the fairest option because everyone consumes differently. One person’s sparkling water and salad shouldn’t be subsidising another’s steak, sides, and dessert situation. It might take a few extra seconds on your phone, but apps make it painless. And honestly, nothing sours a great night faster than realising you just paid for half the table’s cocktails you didn’t touch.

Have your say in the comments and let us know if you have any topics you want discussed. If you’re using the Stuff app on iOS you’ll need to view Stuff.co.nz on a browser to view and post comments.
