Construction of $192,000 public toilet block underway at Glenavy

A $192,000 public toilet block for a popular State Highway 1 rest area has been designed to “blend seamlessly with the natural landscape”.
The project has been made possible by the Government’s Three Waters Better Off funding, the Waimate District Council announced on Wednesday.
Waimate District Mayor Craig Rowley said the rest area was very well frequented by travellers on State Highway 1.
“It would have to be one of the most picturesque settings for a public toilet in the country, and will blend seamlessly with the natural landscape,” he said.
The council said the Glenavy rest area, “nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Waitaki River and newly developed Recreation Reserve” was a vital stopover for travellers.
“Recognising its importance, the Waimate District Council aims to enhance the overall visitor experience.”
The new Exeloo amenity would feature two cubicles, both of which were wheelchair accessible.
Local contractors had been engaged to prepare the foundations, install, and connect the toilet block, with completion expected by early July 2024.
The existing water system and septic tank would be reused, making the build more environmentally friendly.
The new building would be built beside the current toilet block, which would be demolished once the new toilet block was operational.
The council said access to clean and well-maintained facilities contributed to the health and wellbeing of the community and visitors to the district, and was a key outcome in the council’s Long Term Plan.
