A 24-year-old man has been charged with arson after a fire at Prime Minister Chris Luxon’s Auckland electorate office sparked a police investigation.
Police announced the charge on Thursday, less than 24 hours after emergency services were called to the office on Millhouse Drive in Northpark following reports of a small fire.
The man is due to appear in Manukau District Court on Thursday charged with arson.
Police said they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the fire.
The charge follows Wednesday’s incident at Luxon’s electorate office, where emergency services responded shortly after 9.50am to reports of a fire at the rear of the building.
At the time, Detective Inspector Karen Bright said the blaze was extinguished quickly by Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews and was being treated as suspicious.
“A cordon has been established with a scene examination to take place,” Bright said.
“We are treating the circumstances as suspicious, and investigations will be ongoing.”
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said firefighters were called to reports of a small fire on a deck. The fire was believed to be out on arrival, but crews dampened down the area before leaving.
A spokesperson for Luxon said staff were safe and unharmed.
Witnesses told Stuff they heard a loud bang shortly before emergency services arrived.
Nearby pharmacy worker Phillip Kang said he initially thought the noise was either a car backfiring or a crash.
Local resident Anel Viljoen also described hearing a loud bang that rattled her house and interrupted a phone call.
Police remained at the scene throughout Wednesday while investigators examined the area.
