Auckland braces for huge Saturday as 85,000 fans head to three major events

Aucklanders are being urged to plan ahead this Saturday as more than 85,000 people are expected to pack into three major sporting events, putting extra pressure on roads, buses and trains.

The busiest night on the city’s sporting calendar will see the All Blacks take on Ireland at Eden Park, the Warriors host the St George Illawarra Dragons at Go Media Stadium, and the Harlem Globetrotters perform at Spark Arena.

Auckland Transport (AT) says fans should allow extra travel time and consider public transport, warning roads and services will be especially busy after the events finish.

Around 50,000 fans are expected at Eden Park for the All Blacks’ Nations Cup clash, with kick-off at 7.10pm.

Match tickets will double as free public transport passes on buses and trains from 3pm, with special event buses and extra train services running before and after the game.

The Warriors’ sold-out clash with the Dragons kicks off at 7.35pm, with more than 24,500 fans expected at Go Media Stadium.

While free transport is not included for Warriors fans, frequent train services will operate to nearby Penrose Station. However, passengers heading west after the match will need to transfer to rail replacement buses because part of the Western Line will be closed between Waitematā (Britomart) and Morningside from 8.30pm to 10pm.

Meanwhile, basketball fans heading to the Harlem Globetrotters’ 100th anniversary world tour show at Spark Arena are also being encouraged to arrive early, with the event beginning at 6pm.

AT says buses, trains and roads are all expected to be heavily congested throughout the evening and is advising people to check journey planners before travelling.

A dedicated events team at the Auckland Transport Operations Centre will monitor traffic conditions and public transport services in real time throughout the night.
