The person police are searching for in relation to the Ponsonby shooting, Hone Kay-Selwyn, can be revealed to be a family man, with two kids

Stuff can reveal the man police are looking for in relation to a fatal shooting on Ponsonby Rd is Auckland local, Hone Kay-Selwyn.

On Sunday night, a homicide investigation was launched after a man was shot dead on the central Auckland street.

More than 36 hours later, no arrests have been made and police continue to appeal for information about 31-year-old Selwyn.

The man has previously appeared in court on two charges - one of assault and one of breaching bail.

A large part of a central Auckland road was shut off, and guarded by armed police, after a person was found dead on Sunday night.

He appeared in the Waitākere DC in May 2020 on a charge of assault with intent to injure. The following month, he was charged with breaching his bail.

In December 2020, he was charged with breaching his community detention conditions.

A now deleted social media message posted by Selwyn’s partner late on Monday said that she had been inundated by messages “concerning Hone’s actions last night in Ponsonby”.

She asked for space to process the “tragedy”. She said she was “deeply sorry” and felt a “great sense of shame about the situation”.

On Sunday, a man tried to enter a bar on Ponsonby Rd, but was denied entry because it was closing, Barry said.

The man was then seen “lingering” on Ponsonby Rd, towards the Richmond Rd end.

At around 10.15pm, a group of four people - including the victim - got out of a parked car and walked in the man’s direction.

“Enquiries so far indicate multiple shots were discharged,” Barry said.

Police allege the man who was earlier denied entry to the local bar was the man who fired the shots.
