Heavy rain is predicted to sweep the Nelson region until Tuesday morning.

An orange heavy rain warning has been issued for Nelson on Monday night.

Metservice has issued the warning from 3pm on Monday until 9am on Tuesday.

The Tasman district, especially the area west of Motueka, is set to be the most affected, the weather agency said. Between 80mm to 120 mm of northeasterly rain is expected about the ranges. Peak rainfall intensities of 10mm to 20 mm were forecast.

Metservice said further rain or showers were expected through to Tuesday night.

Two weeks ago the region was hit by heavy rain that caused slips and surface flooding, particularly around the Riuwaka River.
