massive wildfire in Nelson's Pigeon Valley has sent plumes of smoke across the region. 182 houses have been evacuated near the fire, with about 400 people affected. The fire now covers about 1900 hectares, with a perimeter of 22km.

On Thursday although the fire has not progressed, it was still deemed as being out of control. A second fire, which started on Rabbit Island and was later brought under control, has deemed 'suspicious'. Ground crews and helicopters have been fighting the fire, and a Defence Force Hercules has provided reinforcements.
