Auckland woman undergoes surgery after being impaled on fence

A 32-year-old woman has undergone surgery to remove a 13cm-long metal spike after she was impaled on a fence.

The woman was injured outside Auckland's Galbraith's Ale House about 10pm on Wednesday.

The injury happened when she slipped while jumping off a concrete pillar, where she had been sitting waiting for a concert at the nearby Powerstation, landing on the metal spike.

Fire crews worked to steady the woman and cut the metal fence.

She was taken to Auckland City Hospital with the metal spike embedded in her upper thigh.

She underwent surgery on Thursday morning to remove the spike. She is expected to suffer no ill effects from the injury.
