Suspicious Tamahere fire being investigated

Hamilton Fire Service and police are investigating a suspicious fire in Tamahere in the early hours of Saturday morning. 

A fire truck and a Cambridge water truck attended the carport fire in Cranmere Drive at 2.55am.

No one was injured, fire shift manager Daniel Nicholson said, but the structure and the car it contained were destroyed.

Neighbours said they heard a loud bang, like fireworks, around the time of the fire, but did not see anything. 

The fire took an hour to put out. 

Hamilton CIB Detective Sergeant Terri Wilson said emergency services arrived to find the car and carport well ablaze.

'Prompt calls from the neighbours to the 111 service allowed firefighters to contain the blaze to the vehicle and carport, keeping the damage to a minimum.' Wilson said.

Police were to remain at the address for the remainder of the day while a scene examination is conducted.
