Leaky roof closes library indefinitely in Point Chevalier, Auckland
Friday, 7 October 2022
The public library in Point Chevalier was closed on Friday “until further notice” due to ongoing problems with a leaky roof which have damaged the floor and decor.
Auckland Council head of delivery Kevin Marriott said the library was being closed proactively to protect the health of visitors and staff.
“The library has long suffered from ‘weathertightness’ issues and we want to carry out further assessment to ensure air quality levels remain safe.”
Marriott said recent heavy rain appeared to have made the situation worse and the place had a “damp odour” and signs of mildew.

The library will be closed at least until a newly-elected Albert-Eden Local Board is sworn and able to consider the matter.
“We understand that this temporary closure will cause some inconvenience to the Pt Chevalier community,” Marriott said.
The building was opened in 1989 and has been remediated several times over recent years with improvements to the roof, gutters and windows.
The council advised that staff would still be present in the foyer of the library on Saturday to receive election ballot papers and books to be returned.
The nearest open libraries are in Avondale, Grey Lynn, Mt Albert and Mt Roskill.
