Serious head-on collision closes road near Wellsford, north of Auckland

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious head-on collision on State Highway 1, near Wellsford, north of Auckland.

A spokeswoman for St John said three ambulances had been sent to the scene along with two helicopters.

A police spokesman said police were called to the scene at 2.15pm and the crash had been between two cars.

'Two people have been seriously injured and are being taken to Auckland City Hospital.'

'Motorists are advised to avoid the area,' the spokesman said.

In a tweet, NZTA said a section of SH1 between Vipond Road and Maeneene Road had been closed due to the crash.

'Avoid the area if possible or be prepared for a detour,' it said.

The police spokesman said the road would likely be closed for several hours as the serious crash unit examines the scene.
