Man dies following Monday school pool incident in Masterton

A man critically injured in a school pool in Masterton in the early hours of Monday morning has died.

Police said the 58-year-old man has died in Wellington Hospital following the incident at St Matthew’s Collegiate earlier this week.

A police spokesperson said they were investigating the death on behalf of the coroner and would release their findings “in due course”.

“Police extends its condolences to the man’s family and loved ones.”

Principal Kiri Gill said a small blessing was held at the school pool on Wednesday morning “to acknowledge the tragedy that occurred on our site”.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family and to those involved and offer our support to all those connected to this tragedy.”

Gill also thanked the rescue services including police, ambulance, and fire officers for their efforts when it happened.

“I am sure that I join many others in extending gratitude to our fine safety services and their attention to community and national safety and welfare.”

The death of the man comes at a time when there has been an huge spike in drownings across the country over the holiday period.

“New Zealand is an island nation, and a big part of what we do recreationally is either in or around the water,” Gill said.

“Enjoying time in our waterways- at the ocean, at the local river, lake or swimming pool is a part of the Kiwi way of life, therefore it is vital that when we use our waterways we follow the guidelines, make the right decisions and take precautions, so we can safely enjoy fun with friends and family.”
