A person was killed after a trailer loaded with glass panels detached from a van and collided with a car.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the three-vehicle crash on State Highway 7 (Weka Pass Rd) in Hurunui, North Canterbury, at 12.10pm on Friday.

Stuff understands the driver of the van was driving along State Highway 7 when the trailer, carrying glass panels, detached from the van’s tow-bar. The trailer and glass panels then smashed into a car.

The driver of the car died at the scene.

One person has died and another has been moderately injured following a serious crash involving three vehicles in North Canterbury.

In a statement, through his lawyer, the driver said: “I am incredibly upset by this unintended and unforeseen accident and my thoughts are with the deceased's family.”

He said he was unable to comment further at this stage.

Another person was moderately injured and treated at the scene, and a rescue helicopter was sent but not needed.

An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is under way.
