Riders have been asked to wear red - a favourite colour of Norriss.

The incident has sparked calls from cycling advocates for the New Zealand Transport Agency to take more action to protect cyclists on the stretch of road.

There is no protected cycle lane for northbound riders between Wellington and Lower Hutt. About 400 riders use the route daily.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Norriss' death.
