An investigation will examine what caused a blaze to break out at a family home on the outskirts of Hamilton on eve of Christmas.

Firefighters were alerted to the flaming house on Pencarrow Rd in Tamahere shortly before 11pm on Sunday.

The blaze reached second alarm, with 10 crews remaining at the scene for four and a half hours, Fire and Emergency NZ northern communications shift manager Daniel Nicholson said on Monday.

It's not being treated as suspicious, but a fire investigator will look into the cause of the fire on Monday morning.

There were no injuries, Nicholson said.

Neighbours told Stuff the family were home at the time, with a teenager daughter raising the alarm.

Firefighters had drained the water from a neighbouring pool to help extinguish the blaze.

The blaze appeared to have ignited in the roof, which had completely collapsed.

One woman, who declined to be named, said she was alerted to the fire by a 'popping' sound.

After spotting the fire trucks lined along the road, she noticed the glow of flames from the house.

Flakes of ash had landed on her driveway by Monday morning.
