One person dead after crash on Whangamoa Saddle

One person has died after a crash on the Whangamoa Saddle near Nelson.

A police spokeswoman said the crash happened on State Highway 6 on the Rai Valley side of the saddle at about 12.40pm on Wednesday afternoon.

At 1.30pm the spokeswoman confirmed that one person had been killed in the crash, which involved a single vehicle.

She said the road at the crash site on State Highway 6 was set to be closed for several hours between Hira and the Rai Valley, with police advising motorists to take alternative routes.

As of 2.50pm, one lane of State Highway 6 between Hira and Rai Valley had been re-opened.

The Serious Crash Unit was on its way to the scene.
