A helicopter is joining the search for a tramper missing in the Tararua ranges northeast of Wellington for two nights.

Police said a helicopter and land search began at 7am on Monday morning for the man, from UK, overdue from completing the Northern Crossing from Ōtaki.

It was the second day of the search.

The man, who was staying in Wellington, was due to finish the tramp at noon on Saturday but didn't arrive at the Mt Holdsworth road end near Masterton.

Police Search and Rescue teams completed a search of huts in the area as well as an initial aerial search.
