Two people badly hurt, road closed after crash near Waipawa, Hawke's Bay

The intersection of Pourerere and River roads, near Waipawa, where two people were badly hurt in vehicle crash on Monday evening.

A crash has left a person fighting for their life, and closed a road in Hawke's Bay.

Police said one person was in a critical condition and another had serious injuries after two vehicles collided at the intersection of Pourerere and River roads, near Waipawa, about 7pm on Monday.

They had been taken to hospital.

Five other people were assessed by paramedics at the scene but did not appear to be seriously injured, police said.

The police Serious Crash Unit had been to the scene, where officers were investigating the cause of the crash.

Pourerere Rd is blocked at the intersections with Tod and Hautope roads. River Rd is also cordoned off at the Elsthorpe Rd turnoff.

Diversions are in place and police expected the roads to remain closed for at least two hours.
