Unruly British tourists 'hiding in the Wellington hills'

The unruly British family attracting attention in New Zealand say they have been forced to hide in the Wellington hills.

A member of the family, who have become famous for their escapades in Auckland and Hamilton, say they fear going out in public.

The family made their way to Wellington on Thursday, and were reportedly turned away from a motel in the northern suburb in Newlands.

One of the family members, John Johnson, told Newshub on Friday the family felt like 'refugees' and were hiding in the mountains north of Wellington.

'The reason being is that we feel that we're going to be attacked by the locals,' he said.

Johnson said he was with his elderly mum and dad, who are in their 60s, his sister-in-law, and three children, aged seven, three, and seven months.

He said they were a respectable family and now feared they would be attacked by locals if they were seen, Newshub reported.

The family first made headlines in New Zealand after they left beer boxes, bottles and baby wipes at Takapuna Beach in Auckland at the weekend.

The group were also labelled 'rude' and 'ready to fight' after they threw food on the ground at an Auckland hotel and cafe.

They then caught the attention of police in Hamilton on Tuesday when they started causing problems at Burger King on Te Rapa Straight.
