Man dies while tramping the Tongariro Crossing

A man has died while tramping the Tongariro Crossing this morning.
A police spokeswoman said the man died near the Red Crater after suffering a medical event. Police were alerted after a personal locator beacon was set off at 8.40am and the body was then recovered by a rescue helicopter.
A karakia has been held at the Mangatepopo Road end of the crossing and a rāhui has been put in place on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing until the morning of November 27.
The death has being referred to the coroner.
