State Highway 1 reopens north of Wellington following serious crash

A woman was left in a critical condition following a car crash on State Highway 1 on the Kāpiti Coast, which closed the road in both directions.

Police said emergency services were called to the scene, north of Te Horo, just after 5.50pm on Monday after a vehicle went off the road near Te Waka Rd.

Emergency services were on scene and a helicopter had been called to airlift the person to hospital.

The woman was trapped. No one else was injured and no other cars were involved in the crash.

The New Zealand Transport Agency put stop-go traffic management in place. Drivers were asked to delay travel if possible and expect delays.

The highway had re-opened by 7.30pm.
