A crash involving a ute and two trucks has blocked State Highway 1 north of Tokoroa.

Three people were injured in the accident, near Tamatea Rd, around 12.10pm on Thursday.

Detours are in place while the road is closed, a 2.10pm NZ Transport Agency update said.

Two trucks and a ute were involved in the crash, Fire and Emergency Northern Communications shift manager Craig Dally said.

No one was trapped.

St John Ambulance sent two helicopters, a jeep and an ambulance, the first of which arrived at 12.22pm.

One person was flown to Waikato Hospital in serious condition, a spokeswoman said.

Two others - with moderate and minor injuries - went to Tokoroa Hospital by road.

Detours were being set between Rollett Rd and Wiltsdown Rd (south of Lichfield), the NZ Transport Agency said.

They add about 15 to 20 minutes to the journey.
