Hailing from Te Runanga o Koukourārata, a settlement near Port Levy on Banks Peninsula, Manaia Cunningham's passion for his iwi and the local environment has led to roles as a strategic advisor with Environment Canterbury and as a representative for Ngāi Tahu on the board of Regenerate Christchurch.

He sees the Treaty of Waitangi as something all New Zealanders should be working to protect.

New Zealanders, both Māori and non-Māori, are intrinsically linked by it, Cunningham says in a video essay for Stuff's Treaty and Me series.
