Dead Doubtful Sound diver named
Sunday, 25 March 2018
Police have named the diver who died at Doubtful Sound on Saturday.
He was 54-year-old Ian Gregory Wells, of Roxburgh, who was found unresponsive in the water near Bauza Island.
Sergeant Ted Hollebon said police received a report about 1.45pm on Saturday that the diver had been recovered.
A distress call had been sent out, and a nearby vessel with a doctor on board responded.
That doctor performed CPR on Wells, but he did not survive.
Nine people - three of whom were diving - were on the boat when the diver got into trouble.
The two other divers who helped bring the man to the surface were flown to Southland Hospital as a precaution.
The death will be referred to the coroner.
