Fatal crash on Rangitīkei road

A 6-year-old boy has died and four others were injured when a ute crashed down a bank in the rural lower North Island.

The car left the road shortly before 2.15pm on Tuesday. It had been travelling on Turakina Valley Rd, between Kauaekeke Rd and Bald Hill Rd, in Rangitīkei, a  police spokesperson said. 

Three people were taken to Whanganui Hospital by road, and one person was winched from the scene by helicopter and flown to the hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman said on Wednesday a child and a woman in her 20s were in a stable condition in hospital. 

The other two people taken to hospital had been discharged.
