A man has drowned and five more hurt after a mass water rescue at Cable Bay in Northland.

Northland police said the man was 54 years old. His next of kin are being notified.

Another person pulled from the water has been helicoptered to Whangarei Hospital in a critical condition.

Three more patients have been taken to the hospital with another two treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.

Cable Bay is part of Doubtless Bay. The beach incident happened just after 4pm on Tuesday.
