A look ahead to the new Peugeot 5008 SUV

Tuesday, 8 September 2020

By early-2021 Peugeot dealers will enjoy a completely refreshed line-up of SUV models.

The new generation 2008 SUV compact model recently went on sale and Peugeot importer Auto Distributors New Zealand last week advised its updated 3008 SUV – including a plug-in hybrid model – will launch in early 2021.

The timing will be similar for the larger 5008 SUV – which features a longer wheelbase and seven-seat capability - due in New Zealand showrooms from early 2021.

Updated styling follows the latest 3008 themes to include redesigned headlamps which provide a more purposeful appearance while the front end is accentuated with a frameless grille and signature hook-shape LED Daytime Runnings Lights.

The rear of the 5008 SUV features new upgraded tail lights with full LED technology which display the renowned 3D Claws motif and a painted tread plate.

There are new 19-inch alloy wheels to identify the updated 5008 SUV along with two new exterior colours – Celebus Blue and Metallic Copper – to provide seven exterior choices.

Both engines will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission which features a centre-console mounted driving mode selector offering Normal, Sport and Eco settings.

Peugeot says the cabin of its largest model becomes a more engaging experience with the introduction of a 12.3 inch fully customisable and configurable “digital headset’’ instrument display which forms a key part of the Peugeot i-Cockpit layout.

There’s also a 10 inch high-definition touchscreen supplemented by toggle switch controls which provide one-touch access to the most frequently used comfort-related functions.

The revised 5008 SUV GT will be available with both petrol and diesel engine options. The upgraded PureTech 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol now develops 133kW (up from 121kW) while the 2.0-litre four-cylinder BlueHDi diesel offers also 133kW with an impressive 400Nm of torque.

New driving aids, including Lane Position Assist will be introduced on the 2021 model.

The primary appeal to the 5008 SUV is the additional space and versatility it offers compared to the 3008 SUV. A 165mm stretch of the wheelbase is added to the PSA Group EMP2 platform providing increased second row legroom, three-row seating versatility and additional load space.

“The beauty of the modularity associated with the 5008 SUV is the ability to reconfigure the interior to cater for a myriad of different seating options and load-carrying requirements,’’ said Chris Brown, CEO of Auto Distributors New Zealand.

The second row consists of three independent sliding seats which are adjustable in length and incline, and can also be folded.

“One of the true innovations of the 5008 SUV is the ability to completely remove either one or both of the seats in the third row,” said Brown.

“Each seat weighs only 11kg, meaning they are very easy to take out, but also to reinstall as and when required.

“This creates further options when transporting people and luggage and also adds capacity to the cargo area, increasing the volume of the space considerably depending on individual configuration.”

When the third row is removed, load space is 1060 litres and with the second-row seats folded flat this increases to 2150 litres. The front passenger seat can also be tilted forward, providing space for items as long as 3.2 metres to be loaded through the vehicle.

Further convenience is provided by a hands-free electric tailgate, activated with the kick of a foot under the rear bumper, means it’s even easier to place items into the boot without the need to unlock via a traditional key operation.

The 5008 was the second best-selling Peugeot model in New Zealand last year behind the 3008. The current 5008 SUV line-up includes the Allure model with the 121kW petrol engine and six-speed automatic priced from $52,990 while the GT model with 133kW 2.0 litre diesel and eight-speed auto is $62,990.

More information and pricing for the new Peugeot 5008 SUV will be released closer to launch early next year.
