Christchurch residents considering making the switch to an EV, or who are just curious about them, will be able to get up close and personal with the largest range of electric vehicles to go on display in New Zealand next weekend.

Organised by the Christchurch City Council, the Take Charge Christchurch Expo is set to showcase the latest and greatest in battery electric vehicles and to give people a chance to see first-hand the vehicle technology that is available right now to make the switch from fossil-fuelled vehicles.

Here is every new electric car you can buy in New Zealand as of September 2022.

The two-day expo will take place at Te Pae Convention Centre over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of September and will be free for the public to attend.

Council Resource Efficiency Manager Kevin Crutchley says there will be around 50 electric vehicles on display at the expo, including cars, vans, off-roaders, motorcycles and mopeds. The majority of major new car brands will be represented, including newcomers to the New Zealand market like BYD, with its Atto 3 small SUV.

LDV will display the first all-electric ute available in New Zealand, the eT60, while brands like Niu and Horwin will be there with a range of electric scooters. New Zealand manufacturer Ubco will also have a range of its electric work and adventure bikes.

“People are encouraged to come and inspect these zero exhaust emission vehicles, ask questions of our expert dealership exhibitors, and find out about this exciting vehicle technology,” said Crutchley.

“There will be prizes available, courtesy of our exhibitors, including having the opportunity to go into the draw for the use of battery electric vehicles for a specified time.’’

Christchurch City Council has set a target of halving the district’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (excluding methane) and Crutchley said that with on-road petrol and diesel transportation making up approximately 36 per cent of the district’s emissions a critical part of meeting that target will be those who can making the move to zero exhaust emission vehicles as soon as possible, as well as embracing other modes of zero emission transportation.

The Take Charge Christchurch Expo will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm, Saturday 17 September and 9am to 5pm, Sunday 18 September 2022. People can enter Te Pae Convention Centre via the main entrance on Oxford Terrace.
