Ford is reportedly preparing to show off the seventh-generation Mustang at the 2022 North American International Detroit Auto Show, set to kick off in September.

The 2022 running of the show will be the first since 2019, after the 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to Covid. As such, it’ll probably be a bigger event than usual, although no other launches have been confirmed or teased as yet.

Don’t worry, the V8 will soldier on.
Don’t worry, the V8 will soldier on.

According to Automotive News, which cites people close to the Mustang programme, the new car will use carryover V8 and four-cylinder Ecoboost engines. Hopefully, Ford will also continue with the ten-speed automatic and six-speed manual pairing, although it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see the manual bow out.

Previous rumours have also indicated Ford will reuse the current engines, although the power figures will probably be improved for the new model. We’d expect the pony car to eventually get some degree of electrification to keep up with Chevrolet’s upcoming hybrid Corvettes and abide by emissions rules.

Ford isn’t confirming anything, of course, only saying that the “seventh-generation Mustang is on the way and we can’t wait to share more details soon.”

The current Mustang launched in 2015, with a facelift arriving in 2018, and while it has been incredibly popular in the segment, has seen flagging sales recently. In its home market of the US, sales dropped 14% over 2021, with 52,414 units sold over the year. The first six months of 2022 has seen another drop of 18%.

It’s still quite popular here, with 145 units sold for the year to June, easily the most popular front-engined, rear-drive sports car on our market. Of those, less than ten were specified with the manual transmission.

The Mustang is also important to Ford as the spearhead of its own sub-brand, currently filled out by the Mustang Mach-E.

New Zealand is set to get the electric SUV early next year, with full model specifications and pricing details to be announced closer to launch.

“The Mach-E is one of the most exciting vehicles Ford has ever introduced, and it will be amazing on New Zealand roads,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director, Ford New Zealand.

“For us, this is a big success already – it’s taken a lot of work behind the scenes, but now we’re very excited to be launching this incredible vehicle to our customers.”
